camera

My camera has somehow vanished into oblivion along with my memory card and not-yet uploaded pictures. I fear it stolen or thoroughly misplaced. Either way, my bad, no pics til I can get a new one. That one was only a couple weeks old, too. Sigh...

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

Progress! Count it!

Hey, dudes. Man, so much has happened in the last few weeks. Let's see....

Don went on his trip to China a few weeks ago and before he left he managed to impress me even further by not only riduculing a mentally challenged man who was helping on the farm but also rolling his Toyota pickup over on the driveway. I was in bed already and he calmly came over and said, "I may need your help for a second. I flipped the truck." so I supervised while he towed it out. Luckily no one was hurt. The dog was in the back, but managed to jump out and the truck was only mildly damaged. He backed up right onto the sloping hill putting the truck at a sharp angle and it rolled. I'm not sure whether it was him talking on the phone or those Newcastle bottles that rolled out that contributed more. Hmmm...

Mya came with her boyfriend Sean for a week after Don left and I just kinda bummed around with them. I got to see a few new places that way. Turns out there's a really cool freshwater pool and waterfall area right near the farm called Kipu falls! It's incredible with these huge banyon (sp?) trees that the local kids just scurry up the roots to get to the rope swing 20 feet up. I did the rope swing, but I couldn't muster the courage to jump off the falls which were even higher. It was beautiful! (Lauren I'm taking you there for sure!) They also took me to the Sheraton and we bummed some hammocks and I swam around in their salt water lagoon. Apparently enjoying local hotel ammenities is a pretty regular thing for locals. It's a tradition I can get into. :) After they left, it was just me on the farm for a week or so. All I really had to do was the daily chores and fit in the few projects that Don left for us. It was really great to make up my own schedule and get things done without someone over my shoulder telling me what a fuckup I am. I got a real sense of accomplishment from that week, moreso than I have sense I got here. I can definately see now how farm work can be fulfilling for people. It's hard work and you get dirty and hot as hell, but it's still satisfying, you know?

Things are getting better on the social front as well. I'm making more friends just through frisbee people and then through their friends as well. So, that's coming along nicely. Suddenly, I actually have plans on the weekend and some weeknights. It's great, I was worried I was going to have to become a shut-in or something. Phew. I went surfing for the first time with this guy Jeremy a couple weeks ago. Man, that shit is hard! Ocean 1, Jennifer -10. Jeez. I was definately exhausted and bleeding from getting cut up on the reep, but by the end I had stood up just a little on the wave and I was still smiling. So, I still consider it a good time. I'm just going to have to keep practicing. Maybe Don will let me borrow one of his boards....

Also, I got to spend the weekend with 7 Candians... Ryan is a guy from frisbee. He is from Canada. He had 6 friends fly in to visit. I got to hang out with them instead of tooling around the farm. Met up with them on a Friday and we poached the hot tubs at the Marriott then went dancing at a club called The Point which is actually in the Sheraton. I finally got to go dancing. It's literally been months. How I missed it so! Fortunately I'm not afraid to make a fool of myself and was the only one on the dance floor for awhile. Those Canadians are some wallflowers. Saturday we all went to a beach on the west side called Salt Pond. They make Hawaiian salt there which is actually red from the minerals it soaks up. It's also a nice beach, too. :) Then dinner, drunkeness, ping pong and back to the farm on Sunday. Last night I got invited to a birthday dinner and met some more people and tomorrow I'm going to a keg party on huge beach on the West Side called Poullihale(sp?). I've been told that there are dunes aplenty to pass out on. So, we shall see! Anyway, my point is, finally friends and activities! Yay! :D

Don's been back for a week or so. I thought maybe he'd be nicer given his vacation time, but it was straight back into asshole mode complaining about work I'd done. It doesn't occur to him that he couldn't have even gone on vacation if I hadn't been working on the farm. Who else would babysit the dog, water allllll the plants and feed the animals. Benevolant fairies maybe, or those helpul farm elves...eyeroll. Anyway, sorry, enough bitching. Things are a little better now, though, between us. Mya was here when Don and I got into our first ever screaming fight. I asked him a simple question that he thought was stupid and was kind enough to say, "Let me explain to you why that is a stupid question. Don't waste my time or yours asking stupid questions like that. If you think about it long enough, I'm sure you'll realize why that was a stupid question." I was calm at first and just told him that a yes or a no would suffice, but then he kept on and I finally lost my cool and said what I've been wanting to say for awhile. I called him a crazy fucking asshole and asked him what the fuck was wrong with him. The whole time he kept talking over me and told me to Shut up. At this point Mya came in and he told her that we were arguing because I was asking stupid questions. Man, she layed into him! I guess she had a lot she wanted to say too. She told him he couldn't talk to people like that and that it was unacceptable for him to treat me the way he did. Don was oblivious to the point, though. He thought that I was mad b/c I didn't quite get why my question was stupid so he just kept repeating "Well, don't ask stupid questions." But, afterwards we all settled down and roasted hot dogs and he said he would be more careful about how he talked to people. We'll see...

In regards to the farm, I've still been keeping busy. I finished planting the first taro field yesterday. That felt good. I unclogged a whole stream just a couple hours ago, too. Other than that we're clearing land and planting and things are relatively good. So! Just another fine day in Hawaii.

Man, that was long. Phew! I'll hope to put some pics up soon. They frown upon downloading pictures to library computers, so I'll have to find a time I can be covert about it.

love you, miss you, hollla.
